HAMPSTEAD STREETS FOR PEOPLE

With this community-led initiative, funded through Camden Council, the services of leading transport consultants PJA have been put at the service of Hampstead’s community, to understand local concerns about traffic and transport and identify practical solutions that do not merely move problems from one street to another

A vision for the future

We believe that a citizen-led initiative, based around Camden’s “We Make Camden” strategy that empowers local communities, has the potential to create a joined-up Transport Plan – based on the area’s Neighbourhood Plan - which promote joined-up thinking, better air quality and make the area more pleasant to live in and move around.

In 2020, Hampstead Neighbourhood Forum’s Survey on Measures to Encourage Walking and Cycling identified traffic as the main barrier, but this problem has persisted in recent years. The new initiative led by nationally accredited traffic consultants PJA will draw on the example of a trailblazing initiative in Dartmouth Park, which gave the community a greater say in setting priorities for their area.

For decades local traffic problems have been exacerbated by the “school run” of cars from outside the area. The “school run” is drawn in by Hampstead’s many fee-paying schools and as far back as 2002 local councillors wrote a 74-page report on the problem.

Tackling overall traffic volumes was underlined by HTP’s first online survey in June 2021, when 469 people shared their vision for the Hampstead area

Now, PJA consultants are conducting a second survey to capture as wide a range of views as possible. This survey asks you to tell us more about how traffic affects you, how our streets can change for the better and how this can best be achieved.

CIL funding for project

The Hampstead Transport Partnership (HTP) has gained Camden funding for this initiative which will place the views of Hampstead’s community at the centre of future attempts to solve the problems of traffic that have affected the Hampstead and Frognal area for decades.

This initiative aims to tackle enduring local concerns with overall volumes of traffic and road safety and presents a key opportunity to develop a community-led transport strategy that will consider local issues in a holistic manner.

Representatives of local residents’ groups and businesses have won CIL (Community Investment Levy) funds to make a fresh start, listening to the views of the local community much earlier in the process and harnessing the community’s local knowledge to improve the environment and safety of Hampstead’s streets for its residents and visitors.
